not about nice

I'm pretty sure people at work assume i'm a Christian, but i've never come out and said it. They usually ask church-related questions after i tell them i'm homeschooled, and i'm pretty sure they all think i'm the nicest person ever. But sometimes i get tired of putting on this, "I'm nice because i'm a Christian" front. In other words, i don't want them to think Christianity just makes people "nice" and that's it. I'm really not there to just be nice.
Tonight as i was helping a friend (co-worker) get someone out of bed and we started talking about church. It seems like every time i talk about church or God with anyone at work, i get a series of excuses about why they don't go or why they don't like God, and i don't ask for it. I guess they just feel the need to spill about their whys. The thing is, I usually don't even bring up the subject. They do.
So my friend told me tonight that she used to go the church pretty regularly. She said she even taught kindergarten Sunday school for like four years. I couldn't believe it. Why did she just walk away? I don't know. But i get the feeling that all she was learning there was how to be a nice person. And she didn't need nice lessons.

Michael Yaconelli puts it this way in his book, "Dangerous Wonder."

"Christianity is no longer life changing, it is life enhancing. Jesus doesn't change people into wide-eyed-radicals anymore he changes them into "nice people." If Christianity is simply about being nice, i'm not interested."

Thanks Michelle, sometimes I forget that we are not here to just be nice. We have a greater purpose!
(try being home schooled and a PK and see what kind of questions you get. ;-))
I know what you mean about people talking to you and spilling their whys. I think sometimes they know what is right and are trying to excuse themselves from doing it, not so much for you, but for them.
